Careers at Buckler’s Mead AcademyAt Buckler’s Mead Academy, we realise that young people spend a comparatively short time in school before they move on to further education and their future careers. It is therefore really important that our students are fully equipped with the employability skills they will need for the rest of their adult life. Buckler’s students are given the opportunity to acquire these skills through the varied curriculum we offer here in school and also through a variety of other opportunities such as Alternative Timetable days, Personal Development lessons and Tutor Time. We also have a variety of extra-curricular activities that take place throughout the year such as visits to local employers and visiting speakers, some of which are former Buckler’s Mead students themselves.
We promote active and successful working relationships with local employers, apprenticeship providers and training providers. We are members of the Yeovil Chamber of Commerce as well as the South Somerset 14-19 Partnership. If you are an employer, former student, apprenticeship or training provider and would like the opportunity to come and talk to our students about the jobs and courses you can offer, please contact the office.
AlumniAt Buckler’s Mead Academy we are really proud of the successes of our former students and we love everyone to keep in touch so we can celebrate these with you. We also realise that the challenges and experiences that they have been through help to inspire our current students with their aspirations and choices. Some of our alumni have been into school to give talks about their career routes and current jobs, some have mentored small groups of students and others have worked with specific departments to help GCSE students with specific skills. We would love you to get in touch if you feel you have something to offer and there is no long term commitment to do anything. Whatever you can offer, we know our students will appreciate the time you can give. Please get in touch with the office on office@bucklersmeadacademy.com

This sets out Buckler’s Mead Academy’s arrangements for managing the access of providers to pupils at Buckler’s Mead Academy for the purposes of giving them information about the provider’s education or training offer. This complies with Buckler’s Mead Academy’s legal obligations under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997.
Pupil entitlement
All pupils in years 8 to 11 are entitled:
• to find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships opportunities, as part of a careers programme which provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point;
• to hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer, including technical education and apprenticeships – through options events, assemblies and group discussions and taster events;
• to understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses.
A number of events, integrated into Buckler’s Mead Academy careers programme, will offer providers an opportunity to come into school to speak to pupils and/or their parents.
For pupils of compulsory school age these encounters are mandatory and there will be a minimum of two encounters for year 8 to 9 pupils and two encounters for year 10 to 11 pupils.
The Careers Leader(s) oversees all aspects of the Access policy in action and the planning / delivery of the Buckler’s Mead Academy Careers programme. However, all members of Buckler’s Mead Academy are committed to highlighting further education opportunities to all of our pupils. Heads of Departments, the Pastoral team and Subject Leads are responsible for identifying opportunities that will influence the academic studies and personal development of all students.
These provider encounters will be scheduled during the main school hours and the provider will be given a reasonable amount of time to, as a minimum:
• share information about both the provider and the approved technical education qualification and apprenticeships that the provider offers
• explain what career routes those options could lead to
• provide insights into what it might be like to learn or train with that provider (including the opportunity to meet staff and pupils from the provider)
• answer questions from pupils.
We actively seek to build partnerships with outside agencies, as a means to broaden our pupils’ horizons and to provide them with exposure to a range of education and career pathways.
We run a wide range of careers and options events throughout the year and we would particularly welcome providers’ attendance at year assemblies, where a whole year group is assembled in a hall environment.
The school can offer a variety of hall and classroom spaces for use by providers audio -visual equipment is available. Providers are welcome to leave copies of their prospectus, or other relevant literature, for distribution.
We will offer providers an opportunity to come into school to speak to pupils or their parents or carers. Please speak to our Careers Leader, Naomi Partridge to identify the most suitable opportunity for you.
